Flashback Friday is a popular term on Instagram used to post old photos. It’s only second to Throwback Thursday or #TBT. The social network hashtag reminds me of the friendship/competition between Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain.
So, in honor of this hashtag hangtime, this week’s #FBF photo goes to Boston Celtic legend Bill Russell. In 2013, President Barack Obama visited Russell’s statue and got two Bills for the price of one!
Russell is a 11 time NBA championship winner and ranks in greatness alongside the already mentioned Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul Jabar. 11 NBA wins out of 13 seasons was more than enough for Boston to bring history to life in 2012.
Many athletes have statues dedicated to them, but this one sits in Boston’s City Hall Plaza and is an ode to the Boston Celtics legacy. Russell was also well known to be a fair player and many say that the statue sitting at City Hall reveals his act of good citizenship.
Here in Los Angeles we have Magic Johnson’s statue in front of the Staples Center and Chicago’s United Center has the iconic Michael Jordan in his signature stance. Both athletes demonstrated dedication to their teams while remaining loyal to the game.
Send us your photos of any selfies you have with your favorite athletes’ statues. Post them on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #courtsideaccess @CourtsideAccess and we might feature you!
